Stop The Insanity

Treatment Centers and Why To Go

When you are ready to let go and finally give up this painful way of living, you will need help. An eating disorder has a life of it's own (one of the million dreadful FACTS about eating disorders) and when YOU realize you no longer want to GIVE YOUR LIFE AWAY to an eating disorder, and you want to CLAIM your life back... then you MUST go and get help of some kind (any kind that feels slightly helpful to you) and do so immediately. I can not stress enough the importance of having support and love available. RECOVERY REQUIRES you to be WILLING to love yourself, learn about who you are (besides the eating disorder), and consider why you are making choices which cause you SERIOUS negative consequences. It asks that you start to take care of YOURSELF and look out for your own best interest...which may mean only dealing with loving people in your life for a while and NOT giving up your time with anyone who isn't loving you well... so you may lose a few friends or have to separate yourself from a TOXIC relationship... but it is required that recovery take priority because your eating disorder always did!!

There are MANY options available to begin your recovery steps. I know painfully well that treatment COSTS money and it is difficult to secure the finances to get help. But this should NOT stop your recovery. If you need to admit to a loved one (parent, relative, etc.) that you having an eating disorder in order to get their financial support for recover than DO IT. You don't have much time. You could die at any time and if you are wanting help you gotta be willing to take a deep breath and ask for it. I realize that not everyone even has the OPTION of asking loved ones for treatment money... I'm suggesting that in any means possible you secure some comfort amount of money to really start your new life with support and guidance. Take out a loan, put it on your credit card, tell your story to the local newspaper and raise funds, talk to your local church about money they have to help people and see if your situation qualifies, contact a public organization, TV show,, whoever you can think of and try to fund raise the money if need be... IT WILL BE 100% WORTH IT. And if you cause a stir among the public and tell them yet another story of eating disorders and how insurance won't pay, then all that will do is HELP THE CAUSE and raise public awareness of the NEED for eating disorder treatment (for ALL eating disorders, for ALL weight stages) to be covered. No doubt a few people in your community will suddenly share their own stories and it could be a part of a societal attitude change towards disordered eating.

I know you are the sick one and to find the energy to do the above is a lot, but if you are at all beginning to realize the MAGNITUDE of seriousness and impact that disordered eating has on your life, the world, our culture, and the next generation of young people... then you may understand my passionate energies.

But most importantly, are YOU and YOUR LIFE and when you are ready for treatment please please don't waste any more YEARS with an eating disorder and find help. It is available, even if you have to do a little searching...

THE TRUTH ABOUT TREATMENT CENTERS

If you can afford to spend time in a treatment center (inpatient hospital or residential house) then DO IT. Not everyone is as LUCKY. And yes, I do mean that! I know a lot of ex-patients have hateful attitudes towards treatment centers but that is usually because the person did NOT take (was unable to take) advantage of the treatment center (though sometimes centers themselves are corrupt, in rare cases, and in this case take civil action) and this is unfortunate because even if some of the therapy seems like crap, you can ALWAYS get something out of the experience as long as you are willing to put something into the experience. SO... if you are LUCKY ENOUGH to be able to stay at a TREATMENT CENTER (for hopefully an adequate amount of time), then please visit the below web sites to learn more about these treatment centers and how to contact them (TODAY!! You could reach out and do it TODAY!!! Hooray!).

LIST OF LISA'S (personally) RECCOMENDED TREATMENT CENTERS:

* Monte Nido: ADULTS with eating disorders (women only); RESIDENTIAL. I personally know the therapists at this beautiful Malibu center, and with an intense powerful program, I absolutely recommend Monte Nido. I have loved and continue to adore my interactions with Monte Nido and their day treatment program, The Eating Disorder Center of California. (www.edcca.com) (www.montenido.com)

* Rader Programs: ADULTS with eating disorders (all); INPATIENT HOSPITAL. I have a working relationship and absolutely stand by Rader's long history (Rader was the first eating disorder specialization treatment center and has been around the longest), I believe this program works wonders, especially for COMPULSIVE EATERS, and I'm proud to have been a part of the organization. www.raderpro.com

* Discovery: ADOLESCENTS with eating disorders (male and female); RESIDENTIAL. In a warm, comfortable setting teenagers are treated for disordered eating.

BECAUSE I LIVE IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, and am among a tight group of professionals that specialize in disordered eating here, the above treatment centers are all personal recommendations because I KNOW the people running the programs... I do not have direct contact with other centers enough to know a lot about their treatment modalities. And I beg you, please search around, ask lots of questions, take tours and talk to staff before committing to going into a treatment center and then, if you are lucky enough to afford a chance to go to one, go and work every single second you possibly can.

Of course, there are AMAZING treatment centers ALL OVER THE U.S. and THE WORLD. I would recommend the U.S. only because the research has been done here longer and the epidemic was treated as an emotional issue here first (introducing the psychological aspect, in addition to the medical, as it was always treated). Though eating disorders are GLOBAL, during the 1970's the U.S. began intense investigation that now the WORLD has access to and can improve upon...and ultimately just getting treatment of some kind is all you need... it is just an assistance so you can discover YOURSELF. Anyway, I can not personally recommend treatment centers if I don't know the therapists involved, but that doesn't mean that there aren't a TON of excellent places (there are!!) Please don't stop looking for help with this page! There are a million more referrals available. Below are some that I have a good knowledge of:

* Rogers Memorial Hospital: MEN (adults and adolescents) with eating disorders; RESIDENTAL. Also treats women, a lot of men & eating disorders information and research has been done here, so you'll find more male clients than in the usual treatment centers, though that is changing and there is an INCREASE in men coming in for treatment... (I expect this to continue.)

* The Renfrew Center: AGES 12 + UP with eating disorders (women only); RESIDENTIAL. Renfrew offers excellent conferences on eating disorders to professionals and has been a great player in the attempt to help the planet heal from disordered eating.

* Remuda Ranch: CHRISTIAN ADULTS and ADOLESCENTS; RESIDENTIAL. Please only go to this treatment center if you are Christian, it will absolutely help you overcome the eating disorder. If you are not Christian, I encourage you to continue looking at your options.

* Eating Disorder Professionals Association (EDAP) can help you with more referrals, treatment centers and OUTPATIENT care, so check it out!

* HEALING CONNECTIONS attempts to raise money to pay for eating disorder treatment and may have LOW COSTS solutions that could benefit you starting now!

BESIDES TREATMENT CENTERS...

There are other ways to get help for an eating disorder. Support groups, therapists, nutrition therapists, counselors, and self-help books are available. You need to do the investigating. It is a step towards you taking care of yourself. It isn't difficult, either, because you were genius enough to find my page, so you know how to research stuff! Call information and get the phone number to the Overeaters Anonymous in your area (for example) and ask them where the nearest meeting is (or ask them where the nearest Anorexia/Bulimia Focus meeting is). Call the EDAP hotline and find a therapist in your area that knows about disordered eating. Search the web. Take a step.
