I'm seeing more and more male adolescents with eating disorders who are involved with athletics. The weight wrestling that goes on in the sport of wrestling is an eating disorder in itself, and there's no question that this sport has probably been leading males into the arms of a full blown eating disorder for years but it was never talked about, or reported, or something. And now there are young males who are talking about it, making this group more visible. I've treated wrestlers, football players, basketball players and members of track teams. Some of the athletes have told me about locker room advice for dropping weight, all of which is dangerous and won't work in the long run... such as wrapping yourself in plastic, yes, you'll sweat, yes, you'll lose water, and yes, not only can you die from dehydration doing this just one time, but it doesn't even "work" as a real weight loss. So it's just risking your health and nothing else. So what we have here are guys giving advice to other guys that sounds a lot like a pro-anorexic website. | |
