It is a MYTH that males with eating disorders and/or males in the "goth" subculture are gay. Educate yourself... Gay, Lesbian, Straight, Bisexual and any variation therein people exist in ALL walks of life, always have and always will. It is a part of Nature. Gay, Lesbian, Straight and Bisexual tendencies are found in the wild, in the animal and insect kingdom and have existed since existence.
THIS SECTION WAS INSPIRED BY ALEX H. Thank you, Alex!
Sundae Bloody Sundae The trend in "gothic" culture for the males to be underweightÉ The pressure to be unnaturally thin applies to FEMALES in the Goth community also! Working with teenagers, I have noticed an increase in males with anorexia. What is more alarming is that these are not like the several men I treated when working with adults. The anorexia is disturbingly strong in these young guys. It also isn't related to the expected athletics as much as it is related to a fashion image. This image is known as "gothic" whose followers are often wonderful young artists expressing themselves while exploring the shadow side of self. Is this another sign that anorexia is increasingly inspired in the fashion for young males as it has been for females for so long?? Their "look" is not the typical beauty ideal of a muscular, strong manÉ but instead of a pale slim young man who is able to upset the establishment by wearing forbidden clothes, make-up & hairstyles, all the while pushing the gender boundaries in a refreshing statement of moving beyond the media's demand for barriers between the sexes. (And yes, they are those guys who wear a lot of black.) Images below show some of examples of the "look" that may be encouraging anorexia in young males:

They are plenty beautiful, but their thinness worries me.

Female goths are under the same amount of unreal pressure to appear ghostly thin.

Beautiful youth- don't even get yourself started into an eating disorder... because it will be there, in some way, haunting you for the rest of your life... and every single patient I have treated has told me the same thing: Eating Disorders are NOT WORTH IT, gentlemen.

Females in the "gothic" community, or simply following the "gothic" take on fashion are also vulnerable to this unrealistic, often drawn with apencil, body type... As with EVERYBODY practicing dark arts of any kind, watching Anime, and/or somehow submersed in the subculture of the dark/depressed/black/occult/goth/vampire fringe group...

While I personally adore this subculture and have spent much time immeresed in it myself... more and more (and still more when I thought there couldn't be any more) the images are undeniable. As recently as last weekend, I see anorexic-weight bodies at Goth clubs and S&M clubs, in both Men and Women.
Please don't let all the dark angels waste away to eating disorders! Our planet is better with them, not without! with love to the dark goddesses and dark gods - Lisa
